Walt Koontz è un cinquantenne ex marine ultraconservatore vero e proprio fanatico cultore della forma fisica. Nel luogo dove vive, a New York, è una sorta di eroe locale per aver ucciso in uno scontro a fuoco in banca due rapinatori ed aver liberato gli ostaggi. Ora, accanto alla sua abitazione è arrivato l'appariscente omosessuale Rusty. Il disprezzo fra i due si manifesta subito. Una notte, però, mentre sta correndo in aiuto di un vicino, Walt ha un ictus e resta paralizzato. Pur di non abbandonare il proprio appartamento, accetta un programma di riabilitazione che prevede, fra l'altro, lezioni di canto impartite da Rusty.
