Nel 1957 a Vienna, ex deportata, moglie di un direttore d'orchestra, riconosce nel portiere dell'albergo l'ufficiale delle SS di cui, giovanissima, era diventata l'oggetto sessuale in campo di concentramento, in un tortuoso rapporto sadomasochistico. Al di là del suo successo internazionale di scandalo, il 6° film di L. Cavani ebbe accoglienze critiche disparate: attacchi più o meno moralistici per la sgradevolezza della sua ambigua tematica sul rapporto vittima-carnefice oppure elogi per aver cercato, sulla scia di Visconti, di conciliare il melodramma con un discorso sulle ambiguità della storia. Eccellente direzione degli attori, funzionale fotografia di Alfio Contini, montaggio di Kim Arcalli.
