Nick e Meg sono due docenti inglesi sessantenni, sposati da trent'anni. Si sono recati a Parigi, il luogo romantico dove avvenne la loro luna di miele, per trascorrere un week end. Sono intenzionati a godere pienamente dei piccoli piaceri di una città che gli anglosassoni considerano diversa e sorprendente. In realtà vorrebbero cercare di ritrovare un'intesa e di rivitalizzare il loro matrimonio, ormai ridotto a una convivenza punteggiata da episodi di insofferenza, dopo che i figli, ormai adulti, si sono resi indipendenti. All'inizio del film arrivano in un modesto alberghetto di Montmartre.
